Everyone is invited to the Summer Chinese Whisper Challenge!
-
Hi!
Are you familiar with the children's game Chinese Whispers?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_whispersWe will now try to do the same thing in Fuze! A challenge where a game is started by one person, and after a set period of time another person takes over and adds or changes things, and so on.
Here is the timeline I had in mind:
From now until Wednesday next week (June 22)
Everyone who is interested in participating replies in this thread, stating that they want to join in. Also write if you know there will be dates which you will not be able to participate. Also, please post your Nintendo Friend Code to facilitate easier sharing.Thursday, June 23
I will post a list of which person will be working on which particular game for the coming weeks. Each game will be given a place holder name to easier keep track of it. People will now start working on their games.Thursday, June 30
It is time to switch games. Everyone should friend share their game. Name the game "Game name, version 1". Each person downloads the game they should take over according to the list. They now have one week to add to the previous game design. If possible, also post a screenshot or a status update in this thread.Thursday, July 7
Thursday, July 14
Thursday, July 21
We will do three more switches. In total, every game will have been worked on five times by different people. Remember to keep the original name and adding the version number at the end when sharing.Thursday, July 28
This is the goal date, where hopefully we will have a number of very interesting creations. Some things to keep in mind:
- This is just for fun. There is no pressure that you need to write perfect code or add in any super advanced stuff.
- You do not even have to code. You can design some cool sprites or levels that others can use. Or do a cool intro screen or a banging tune.
- Having said that, when coding, please try to make it easy for the next person. Use functions and variables with descriptive names. Add in comments when things might be hard to understand. Maybe add in a few comment lines at the start that says a little about your thought processes...
- As for what kind of game to make? It's anything goes! Really! Let your imagination run free.
- When it is time to give the game to the next person, it should preferably be able to run without errors, and maybe be in some sort of playable state?
OK, so you got a game that someone else has worked on. What now?
- You can add stuff. New mechanics, new control schemes, new levels, new characters, new ways of scoring, timers, new side missions, new mini games, new fighting mechanics, new power ups, new chapters to the story or maybe new songs.
- You can change stuff. Does the rocket look boring? Make it pink! Are the explosions too small? Let them cover the entire screen! Is ten points too little for each zombie killed? Make it 10 000 points instead! Everything goes. Nothing is sacred! The space ship shoots the enemies? Why not make it defeat them by solving hard arithmetic problems instead?
- How about removing stuff? Well, maybe not just remove something that someone put a lot of effort to do and call it a day. Try to add or change instead like in the examples above. Think of it as if you are doing a remix track. You are the superstar DJ!

I will join myself. My Friend Code is SW-2920-4811-2229 (Jens).
-
People whose friend sharing is not working could perhaps try to finish up on Wednesdays and hopefully their games will be approved by Thursday.
-
Sounds great! So for everyone who says they’re in, you will give a cryptic title or a genre, and we then switch them around weekly? Anyway, I’m in, and my ID is SW-3287-5210-5821.
-
@andyg1985 Something like that. I didn't really intend to give a genre, but I could if you want to?
I will give you a cryptic title though. (I have a system worked out for that!)
-
Cool, can’t wait! Forget about the genre, I just wondered what you meant :)
-
I'l give it a go(friend share currently not working), looking forward to the Frankenstein project.
-
I'll join in too. My friend shares are probably not working though. It will be a lot of fun to see what we make.
-
This is a neat idea! I would like to join. I might be able to contribute certain weeks more or less than others, but I will try!
-
So, just to clarify: if we are five people, there will be five games in total. The first week everyone’s starts on a project. The following week, all projects move on to the next person in a circular fashion. Person 2 gets person 1’s project, person 3 gets person 2’s project, and so on…
-
I'm in
sw-0971-4082-8522 in case you need it -
I think it is to be expected that we are not able to do lots of work every week. Life will likely get in the way.
But let’s all do our best to do at least a small contribution each week. (On the other hand, skipping a week is of course fine too!)
-
I'll participate too.
friend code: SW-2953-5398-5299 -
Ok I’ll do it too.

Super happy that eight people signed up for this little experiment. I think we are going to have a lot of fun!
Here is a list I have put together that shows who will be working on which game:
As you can see, each game has been given a placeholder title, but that will likely change for the finished game. Presumably the people who put the title screen together will pick the name? Or not, it all depends.
So, Week 1 starts today, which means that the following people will be working on the following games:
When the week is finished (that is on next Thursday, or a day in advance if you need to share outside of the friend sharing) it is time to give the project to the next person by sharing it using the placeholder name and "1". So for instance, my game will be shared with the title "Wannabe 1"...
I will set up a new thread for each game in order to not clutter this thread to much. Feel free to use the game-specific threads to share updates and screenshots, ask questions of each other, request help, and so on. When sharing, one can write a message to give the next person a heads-up that it will be available for them to start on.
So the first development week officially begins now!
Have fun! Be excellent to each other!Post here if you have any general questions.

And just to bump this again...

My friend code is sw-6841-1875-1015
Edit: typo, sorry! Fixed now.

Purple has bowed out of the challenge, so here is an updated schedule:
-
UPDATE:
Some people have requested some extra time this week for their games, so we will do the switching on Saturday instead. If you are sharing with a Download ID, please try to have the game ready on Friday so that the Fuze people have time to approve all games before Saturday.
This means that for the last few weeks we will have Saturday as our new game switching day. I will update the schedules later to reflect this change.

I'm away on the 23rd so i won't be able to work on the last game :/ if there's any chance of getting it earlier or a part I can chip away at till then would be good although not the end of the world.
